about

'Rites For Crossing Water' is the second release by electronic folk duo Crewdson & Cevanne and has been released as an EP and booklet on 29 April 2022 via Accidental Editions.

The EP is a collection of songs inspired by the waterways of their multimedia residency at the Random String Festival, set on the Coventry Canal as part of Coventry's year as The UK City of Culture.

Armed with their striking combination of found sounds, stringed and DIY electronic instruments, 'Rites For Crossing Water' is a bridge to something new for the duo.

It follows their debut album, BRACE, which was greeted with a BBC Proms performance and an Ivors Composer Award nomination. The title track of the new EP has been featured as Tom Robinson’s Track Of The Week on BBC Radio 6 Music. Direct and catchy, the new songs are filled with folklore, old and new. RFCW is the result of the duo’s artistic residency along the Coventry Canal, commissioned by Ludic Rooms in 2021.

Encouraged to consider a 21st Century narrative of the waterway, and imagine the traditions of future folk, Crewdson & Cevanne created an audio-visual installation projected onto the backs of billboards and reflected in the canal. The pair wrote nineteen rituals for crossing water, marking nineteen bridges leading to the terminal Canal Basin.

Just as these water-crossing rituals mark a point of transition for those that practice them, this release marks the beginning of a journey into multimedia and new musical styles for Crewdson & Cevanne, and just in time for May Day.

The EP launch has been held on April 29 at The Coal Vaults, The Tin Music & Arts, Coventry Canal Basin, as part of the Waterways Festival.
